West Lodge + Animal Wall
Cardiff

The Grade I listed Animal Wall bounds the historic Bute Park, itself Grade I listed and immediately adjoining Cardiff Centre. Constructed in two phases, the original phase being highly painted, these much loved and admired carved sculptures are in a poor state of repair, the views of the park also being limited by the height of the boundary wall.

Grade II listed Lodge also forms part of this wall, is unused and in a poor state of repair, with a late C20th extension particularly compromising its appearance.

DSA were appointed by Cardiff City Council to advise upon and schedule the repairs required to the Sculptures, Wall, and Lodge; investigate the feasibility of ‘opening-up’ sections of the wall to improve views of the park beyond; and prepare various options for the Lodge’s conversion to accommodate a new use.
