Stourbridge House
Vale of Glamorgan

Davies Sutton Architects were appointed to design a new five bedroom house on the outskirts of Llysworney in the Vale of Glamorgan. The scheme responds to the clients’ requirements for a high quality and energy efficient dwelling to meet modern day living requirements.  DSA has engaged with all stages of the project from conceptual design, obtaining planning and conservation area approvals, developing the technical design and administering a contract for the construction of the dwelling, which continues on site.

Mindful of its sensitive rural setting, the new dwelling replaces an incongruous 1970s build and seeks to enhance the Llysworney Conservation Area.  The house forms a ‘T’ shape, and is orientated to present a principal ‘traditional’ façade that feels like it ‘belongs’ to the village street scene.  In order to achieve this traditional appearance, a steeply pitched welsh slate roof rises above white washed rubble stone walls, with modern detailing integrated to avoid a poor pastiche approach.  In contrast with the traditional appearance of the primary volume, contemporary extensions maximise opportunities for large sliding glazed screens that enable open-plan living spaces to spill out into private garden and courtyard areas.  The main living space benefits from a dramatic, top-lit double height volume.  The dwelling maximises the use of passive solar gains and employs innovative technologies to minimise the consumption of energy.
