St. Dingat's Church
New Tredegar

DSA were asked to investigate the feasibility of undertaking the repair, reordering and extension of St Dingats Church, located in the Rhymney Valley. Titled 'Making Space', the project aims to provide a facility that offers a safe and non-judgemental space in which the wider community can access resources to address the challenges they face.

The first phase of works has focused on repairing the existing building and improving its thermal efficiency. This was undertaken by re-roofing, addressing drainage, restoring the interior of the Church with appropriate materials, and repairing significant defects to the Chancel floor. The addition of rooflights to the South aisle has helped to reveal the beauty of the Church interior, whilst the removal of the pews enables a much more flexible arrangement that can accommodate its diverse range of uses.

The next phase will involve the implementation of a contemporary extension to the North of the building. With planning and faculty approvals in place, this will provide a more open and welcoming facade to the building. Containing a cafe, exhibition space and meeting rooms, it will support and extend the activities of the Church, ensuring it is rooted in the centre of its community.
