Colwiston in Church Grounds
Modern Extension Traditional Roof
St Michael & All Angels Church
Colwinston

One of several medieval churches in the Vale of Glamorgan with Norman origins, with many details still being visible, St Michaels was listed Grade II.  Following the hard work of the Parochial Church Council and with grant aid from the HLF, CADW and the Historic Churches Preservation Trust, DSA were appointed to repair the exterior, provide a new heating system and extend the church to provide a new Meeting Room / Vestry, kitchen and WC.

The entire church was consequently re-rendered and new roof coverings provided, the existing roof continuing over the new extension in traditional Vale of Glamorgan vernacular style.  The medieval roof structure was conserved insitu and supported by a new steel structure, this being hidden within the roof over. Internally and following a complete archaeological appraisal of extant wall paintings, the walls were replastered and the floors relaid, polished limestone flags being used over the new underfloor heating system. New lighting and decoration complete the scheme.

Following this restoration the church was relisted Grade I.
