Existing Farm Buildings
Completed Proposed Scheme
Caemaen Farm
Vale of Glamorgan

A typical early C19th barn, redundant and disused due to the use of modern mechanised methods of farming. A sensitive approach was adopted in achieving consent for its conversion into a single dwelling, the exterior being restored generally using traditional materials including slate, stone, and lime.

The contemporary new porch and joinery however hint that beyond the unassuming facade lies a bespoke and modern interior, with sunken lounge and stainless steel and glass spiral staircase accessing the galleried bedroom above.

Barn conversions present all kinds of controversial issues, none more than the inevitable change in character from an agricultural building to one which is undeniably ‘domestic.’ The approach adopted by DSA at Caemaen Farm respects the traditions of the existing building and its environment, but presents the building's new C20th use in a modern manner and style.
