Gileston Manor
Vale of Glamorgan

Dating to the 16th Century and Grade II* Listed, Gileston Manor is located centrally in the village of Gileston with spectacular views over the Bristol Channel.

DSA were commissioned by the Client to:

  • Identify and implement necessary internal and external repairs to the deteriorating fabric;

  • Reorder the house internally to enable it to fulfil the demands of contemporary living;

  • Develop a new Glasshouse extension to the North elevation including the demolition of existing modern additions, and;

  • Provide a new Kitchen extension to the West elevation to replace an existing modern conservatory.

Planning and Listed Building consent has subsequently been achieved for a scheme that addresses the incremental defects that have been introduced into the house during its relatively recent history. Through a considered understanding and approach to the historic fabric, minimal interventions to the internal layout will dramatically improve the flow through the house and also serve to reveal the significance of its original plan form. The sensitive addition of the Glasshouse and Kitchen extension - contemporary in design, yet clearly informed by the existing architectural context - will furthermore allow this challenging alteration to meet the needs of modern living without compromising the historic significance of the building, affording it a viable future.
