Award winning creative, content and communications specialists Orchard Media and Events Group, required their new headquarters to demonstrate the creativity that is at the heart of this unique company. DSA consequently employed simple and economic methods to improve the tired and dated external appearance of the existing 17,000 sq.ft. warehouse, this enabling the majority of the limited budget to be spent on the interior.
Existing cellular offices and suspended ceilings on the first floor were completely removed, the industrial nature of the existing building being revealed in the process, and providing a new, spacious open-plan office that can flexibly accommodate Orchard's ever changing inter-departmental requirements. New timber-clad 'pods' within this space house meeting rooms, toilet and kitchen facilities, as well as providing a 'blank canvas' for in-house graphic designers to display their skills.
The structural requirement to support the floor over resulted in a more restrained approach being adopted on the ground floor, a combined reception area and cafe being provided together with additional meeting, editing and toilet facilities. Large openings within the floor enabled visual and physical links between the ground and first floor spaces, further enhancing the adopted 'industrial aesthetic' and reinforced by the bespoke design of balustrades, stairs, etc. Exposing all the mechanical and electrical services again accorded with this chosen aesthetic, though requiring detailed coordination and design.
